Missteps in VP selection could undermine APC’s chances in 2027 elections.
Abayomi Mumuni, a senior figure in the All Progressives Congress (APC), has cautioned against replacing Vice President Kashim Shettima ahead of the 2027 general elections, citing concerns over religious considerations.
Mumuni’s warning comes after Shettima’s photograph was omitted from a banner at the North-East Zonal Public Hearing on APC constitutional amendments.

He said the North currently lacks a Christian candidate with the political influence and grassroots following needed to boost the party’s electoral chances.
“Any miscalculation in this regard could jeopardise the winning ticket for the current administration,” Mumuni said, emphasizing that discussions to replace Shettima with a Christian vice-presidential candidate are not strategically sound at this time.
Speculations have circulated about a possible plan to drop Shettima to promote religious inclusivity. However, Mumuni argued that no northern Christian candidate currently possesses the nationwide support necessary to complement President Bola Tinubu’s strength on the ballot.
He warned that replacing Shettima could undermine APC’s chances of retaining power, urging party stakeholders to consider political realities over symbolic gestures.
