Seven local miners have been killed after gunmen attacked a mining site in Kuru community, Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Community sources said the victims were engaged in mining activities when armed assailants stormed the area and opened fire, killing seven people on the spot.
The Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM) confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Rwang Tengwong.
BYM National President, Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri, described the killings as a gross violation of human life and a direct assault on the peace, security, and collective dignity of the Berom people.
According to the association, the victims were peace-loving youths pursuing legitimate livelihoods before their lives were brutally cut short.
BYM warned that the recurring nature of such attacks signals a worsening security situation in Berom land and called for urgent and sustained intervention by authorities.
The group extended condolences to the families of the deceased and prayed for comfort and strength for those affected by the tragedy.

BYM also urged the Plateau State Government, the Federal Government, and security agencies to immediately investigate the attack, apprehend and prosecute the perpetrators and their sponsors, and strengthen security around vulnerable rural communities, mining areas, and access routes.
It further called for intensified intelligence gathering, deployment of adequately equipped security personnel, and adoption of proactive, community-based security strategies to prevent further loss of lives.
“The protection of the lives and livelihoods of Berom youths is non-negotiable,” the association said, reaffirming its commitment to justice, peace, accountability, and the defence of the dignity of the Berom people.
Meanwhile, efforts to obtain a response from the Police Public Relations Officer of the Plateau State Command, DSP Alabo Alfred, were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
