US State grants Nnamdi Kanu honorary citizenship

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has been granted honorary citizenship of the State of Georgia in the United States.

Kanu was declared an Honorary Georgia Citizen by the Georgia Secretary of State, Brad Raffensperger, in an official proclamation dated January 16, 2026.

The proclamation further recognised the IPOB leader as a Goodwill Ambassador of the state, urging that he be accorded all courtesies associated with the status during his travels within and outside the United States.

According to the document, the recognition was issued under the seal of the Georgia State Capitol in Atlanta.

A former Nigerian Ambassador to South Africa, Uche Ajulu, received the proclamation on behalf of Kanu during a presentation ceremony held in Georgia on Friday.

Kanu is currently serving a life sentence at the Sokoto Correctional Centre following his conviction on terrorism-related charges by the Nigerian government.
