Gunmen suspected to be bandits have killed Islamic cleric Alhaji Zainu Mada in Gusau, the Zamfara State capital, after abducting him days earlier. The killing has sparked outrage among residents and local leaders, once again drawing attention to the worsening banditry in Zamfara State.
The Chairman of Gusau Local Government Area, Abubakar Imam, has strongly condemned the killing of the cleric, describing it as “tragic, painful, and completely unacceptable.”

Imam made the remarks during a condolence visit to the family of the late cleric. He was accompanied by Ibrahim Liman, a lawmaker representing Gusau II Constituency in the Zamfara State House of Assembly.
While praying for the deceased, the council chairman asked Allah to forgive his shortcomings and grant him Aljannah Firdaus.
“This is a great loss, not just to the family, but to the entire community. We pray that Allah forgives him and gives his family the strength to bear this painful moment,” Imam said.
Alhaji Zainu Mada was reportedly kidnapped by bandits along the Kotorkoshi–Mada Road some days ago. Despite efforts by his family and community, he was later killed by his captors.
His funeral prayer was held on Friday evening in Mada town, where hundreds of mourners gathered to pay their last respects.
Mada town has long been known as a hotspot for bandit attacks in Zamfara, largely due to its busy commercial activities. Over the years, residents have lost several lives, while millions of naira have been paid as ransom to armed groups operating in the area.
Efforts to get a reaction from the Zamfara State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Yazid Abubakar, were unsuccessful, as his phone lines were unreachable at the time of filing this report.
