The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed that investigations into misconduct by some officers revealed claims of a plot to overthrow the government. The revelation comes more than three months after the initial arrests in October 2025.

At the time, 16 officers — ranging in rank from Captain to Brigadier General — were detained by the Defence Intelligence Agency for allegedly holding secret meetings to topple the government.

The cancellation of the October 1 Independence Day parade was also linked to the alleged plot.

In a statement on Monday, the new Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, said a comprehensive investigation had been conducted in line with established military procedures. The findings show that several officers have cases to answer over allegations of plotting to overthrow the government.

“The investigation, carried out in accordance with military protocols, has now been concluded, and the report has been forwarded to the appropriate superior authority.

“Those indicted will be formally arraigned before relevant military judicial panels to face trial under the Armed Forces Act and other applicable service regulations,”Uba said.

Uba emphasised that the measures are purely disciplinary and are part of ongoing institutional mechanisms to preserve order, discipline, and operational effectiveness within the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN).

He added that the process ensures accountability while upholding fairness and due process.

“The Armed Forces remain committed to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, loyalty, and respect for constitutional authority,” Uba concluded.
