Police confirm medical report, court action pending
The Yobe State Police Command has arrested a 35-year-old man over the alleged rape of a 16-year-old girl in Babbangida town, Tarmuwa Local Government Area, in a case that has sparked concern over rising sexual abuse incidents in the state.
The suspect, identified as Aliyu Yarima, a resident of Potiskum Local Government Area, was arrested by operatives of the Tarmuwa Divisional Police Headquarters following a distress report received on Monday.
Confirming the arrest, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, said preliminary investigations revealed that the incident occurred on January 16, 2026.
According to the police, the suspect allegedly lured the teenage girl and offered her a soft drink mixed with hard drugs, which reportedly caused her to lose consciousness.
“The suspect allegedly took the victim to his residence, where the offence was committed,” Abdulkarim stated.
The police spokesperson disclosed that the victim sustained serious internal injuries, which prevented her from immediately reporting the incident. She was later taken to the General Hospital in Babbangida, where a medical examination confirmed sexual assault.
SP Abdulkarim said investigations are ongoing and assured that the suspect would be charged to court once inquiries are concluded.
He also urged residents to promptly report cases of sexual abuse and other crimes, stressing the command’s commitment to protecting women, children, and other vulnerable persons across the state.
