The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed its readiness to conduct the 2027 general elections, announcing that it has concluded work on the election timetable and schedule of activities.
INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, disclosed this on Wednesday in Abuja during a meeting with representatives of civil society organisations, amid ongoing delays in the passage of the amended Electoral Act by the National Assembly.

Yakubu said the commission decided to proceed with its preparations to prevent disruptions to the electoral process, even as lawmakers continue deliberations on amendments to the electoral law.
According to him, INEC has already forwarded its recommendations and proposals to the National Assembly but acknowledged that the timing of the amendment’s passage could affect some aspects of its planned activities.

He, however, stressed that until a new law is enacted, the commission will continue to operate strictly in line with the provisions of the existing Electoral Act.
“INEC has done all that is required on its part. While we await the conclusion of the legislative process, we have finalised the election timetable and schedule of activities based on the subsisting law,” Yakubu said.
The INEC chairman reassured stakeholders of the commission’s commitment to delivering a credible, transparent and well-organised electoral process in 2027, regardless of legislative delays.
He also emphasised the importance of early planning, noting that timely preparation remains critical to the successful conduct of nationwide elections.
