Remarks come amid global attention on Nigeria’s religious freedom debate
President of the United States, Donald Trump, on Thursday publicly acknowledged Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, during the National Prayer Breakfast held in Washington, DC, commending her faith and leadership within the Christian community.
The event, which took place at the Washington Hilton, was attended by members of the United States Congress, religious leaders, and international dignitaries.

While addressing participants, Trump identified Mrs Tinubu in the audience and praised her for her religious commitment and public service.
He described the Nigerian First Lady as a respected figure and noted her role as a Christian pastor, drawing applause from attendees.
“We’re honoured to be joined today by the First Lady of Nigeria, who also happens to serve as a Christian pastor at the largest church in Nigeria, a very respected woman,” Trump said.
Mrs Tinubu is an ordained pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, one of Nigeria’s largest Pentecostal denominations, and has remained vocal on issues of faith, social development, and national unity.
Trump’s remarks come amid sustained international scrutiny of Nigeria’s security situation, particularly concerns raised by some foreign lawmakers over alleged persecution of Christians in parts of the country.

In October 2025, the US President designated Nigeria as a country of particular concern over claims of religious violence.
However, the Nigerian government has consistently rejected the designation, describing it as inaccurate and misleading.
The Federal Government has maintained that Nigeria’s security challenges stem from terrorism and criminal activities that affect citizens across religious and ethnic lines.
Authorities have also reiterated that Nigeria’s constitution guarantees freedom of religion and equal protection for both Christians and Muslims.
