The Taminu Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected any attempt by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to determine the party’s leadership.

National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, said INEC invited members of the Abdulraman Mohammed-led National Caretaker Committee (NCC) to its quarterly consultative meeting, despite there being no provision in the PDP constitution for such appointments.

Ememobong described INEC’s action as “vexatious and capable of causing widespread breach of peace” and warned that the party would respond through legal channels.

He further stressed that an impartial umpire would have considered ongoing cases at the Court of Appeal, which may affect the leadership issue under discussion.

“We can assure that INEC will not choose a leadership for our party,” he added.

Ememobong urged PDP members to remain calm and hopeful that the Court of Appeal would resolve all leadership disputes.

He reaffirmed that the Turaki-led NWC is “steady and secure” and will ultimately strengthen the party as a credible alternative to the ruling party.
