• Police promote 74,352 officers nationwide across senior and junior ranks

The Nigeria Police Force has promoted a total of 74,352 officers across various ranks nationwide since January 2025, dismissing allegations of irregularities in the exercise.

Details released by the Force Public Relations Department on Sunday showed that the promotions covered both senior and junior cadres, ranging from the rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police to Corporal.
According to the breakdown, 45 Commissioners of Police were promoted to Assistant Inspectors-General, while 69 Deputy Commissioners of Police were elevated to the rank of Commissioner.
The Force also promoted 156 Assistant Commissioners of Police to Deputy Commissioners, 1,014 Superintendents of Police to Chief Superintendents, and 270 Chief Superintendents to Assistant Commissioners.
Other senior promotions included 980 Assistant Superintendents of Police I to Deputy Superintendents, 615 Deputy Superintendents to Superintendents, and 30,828 Inspectors to Assistant Superintendents of Police I.

At the junior cadre level, 16,970 Sergeants were promoted to Inspectors, 8,840 Corporals to Sergeants, and 58 Police Constables to Corporals.
Responding to public criticism surrounding the exercise, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, dismissed claims of a promotion scandal, insisting that the process was transparent and strictly based on merit.
He said the Police Force would not be distracted by allegations aimed at undermining its credibility, stressing that professionalism and proven capacity remained the guiding principles for advancement.
“There is no promotion scandal in the Nigeria Police Force. What we have is a system that rewards diligence, professionalism, and competence,” the IGP said.
The Force noted that the promotions form part of ongoing reforms targeted at improving morale, strengthening leadership capacity, and enhancing operational effectiveness nationwide.
