• SERAP calls on the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) to probe senators over alleged abuse of office in the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.
• The petition cites unauthorised removal of real-time transmission provisions, conflict of interest, and lack of due process.
• SERAP warns such actions undermine electoral integrity and breach the Code of Conduct for Public Officers.
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has petitioned the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) to investigate certain senators for allegedly altering the Electoral Act Amendment Bill by removing provisions on real-time transmission of election results.
The organization claims that the provisions were deleted during plenary, despite a majority vote in favor of their inclusion, and without any debate on the proposed removal.

In a statement signed by Deputy Director Kolawole Oluwadare and addressed to CCB Chairman Abdullahi Usman Bello, SERAP called for a prompt and thorough investigation into the conduct of National Assembly members and executive officers allegedly involved in altering the bill.

The petition highlights concerns over conflict of interest, abuse of office, non-disclosure of interests, and erosion of the Code of Conduct for Public Officers in legislative practice.
“Where lawmaking is shaped by abuse of office and conflict of interest, it ceases to be a legitimate exercise of constitutional and fiduciary responsibility and becomes a legal and ethical infraction,” the statement read, citing paragraphs 1 and 9 of the Code of Conduct for Public Officers and sections 5 and 13 of the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act.
SERAP’s move comes amid public outrage over the Senate’s decision to remove mandatory real-time electronic transmission from the bill, a measure widely seen as crucial for ensuring transparency in Nigeria’s 2027 elections.
