The United States government has formally requested permission to establish a drone refuelling station in Nigeria as part of expanding security cooperation with the country.
The proposed facility would support US surveillance and strike-capable drones currently operating out of Accra, Ghana, enabling extended missions into Nigerian airspace.

The request is understood to be part of Washington’s broader effort to strengthen its counterterrorism and intelligence operations across West Africa.

If approved, the facility would deepen America’s military footprint in the region and enhance the operational reach of US unmanned aerial systems.
However, the move has begun to raise questions around national sovereignty, regional security dynamics, and the extent of foreign military presence on Nigerian soil.
Neither the Nigerian government nor the US Department of Defense has issued an official statement on the proposal as of the time of reporting.
The development comes amid growing security challenges across the Sahel and renewed international focus on stability in West Africa.
