Group insists Abure leadership remains legitimate under party constitution
The Deputy National Youth Leader of the Abure faction of the Labour Party (LP), Dr. Barry Johnson, has criticised recent court rulings affecting the party, describing the judiciary as being in “disarray” and raising concerns about Nigeria’s democratic direction.
Johnson made the remarks during an interview with Trust TV while addressing the ongoing internal crisis within the party following its performance in the 2023 general elections.

According to him, the Abure-led executive is recognised by the party’s constitution, the Electoral Act and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Johnson alleged that certain court judgments relating to the party have weakened its internal structures and created further divisions.
“The court of this country should be questioned. Decisions of the court are wrong,” he said, expressing concern over what he described as the broader implications of such rulings for Nigeria’s democracy.
He further questioned whether the current political environment reflects the democratic values Nigerians hope to sustain for future generations, warning against what he termed undue judicial interference in party affairs.
The Labour Party has been embroiled in leadership disputes in recent months, with multiple factions laying claim to the party’s national structure.
