The Delta State Government has announced plans to inject an additional 120 megawatts (MW) into the national grid as Governor Sheriff Oborevwori moves to expand power generation under the new constitutional amendment granting states greater control over electricity.

The Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, disclosed this during a visit by the State Economic Management Team to Sapele Power Plc in Ogorode, Sapele Local Government Area.

Aniagwu said the administration is deliberately positioning Delta for accelerated industrialisation through sustained investment in the energy sector in line with the governor’s MORE Agenda.

“Energy is the bedrock of industrialisation. To attract industries and create jobs, we must expand our capacity in power generation and distribution,” he said.

Turbines Refurbished Instead of Sold
According to the commissioner, the state reviewed turbines and equipment previously acquired but left idle in Oghareki, Ethiope West Local Government Area.

Rather than sell the equipment as scrap for about ₦3 billion, the government opted to refurbish and integrate them into Sapele Power Plc’s operations through a partnership facilitated by the Delta State Investment Development Agency (DIDA), the Ministry of Energy and the Office of the Chief Economic Adviser.

The upgrade involves the installation of two 60MW Rolls-Royce Trent 60 generating turbines, which will add 120MW to the plant’s existing capacity of over 1,020MW.

“This is a wise, long-term investment that will benefit Delta State and Nigeria,” Aniagwu stated.

Boost for Jobs and Industrial Growth
Commissioner for Energy, Engr. Michael Anoka, described the development as a major step toward meeting the state’s energy needs and supporting industrial expansion.

Chief Economic Adviser to the Governor, Dr. Barry Gbe, said the investment aligns with the new electricity law that empowers states to participate more actively in generation and distribution.

He disclosed that a committee has been set up to liberalise the state’s electricity market, encourage private sector participation in generation, distribution and metering, and ensure affordable power supply.

Chairman of DIDA, Chief Lucky Oghene-Omoru, said the initiative has transformed dormant assets into revenue-generating infrastructure, while the Acting CEO of Sapele Power Plc, Mr. Valentine Ashinze, assured continued collaboration to realise the state’s industrialisation goals.

The move underscores Delta State’s integrated development strategy linking infrastructure, energy expansion and investment promotion to drive sustainable economic growth.
