The Federal Government has formally charged former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai over the alleged unlawful interception of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu’s phone communications.
Court documents, marked FHC/ABJ/CR/99/2026, indicate that on February 13, 2026, El-Rufai admitted on Arise TV’s Prime Time that he and associates intercepted Ribadu’s phone calls without authorization.

The charges are in three counts:Count one alleges that El-Rufai’s admission constitutes a violation under Section 12(1) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Amendment Act, 2024.
Count two claims he knew of others intercepting Ribadu’s communications but failed to report them, violating Section 27(b) of the same Act.

Count three accuses him and unidentified accomplices of using technical systems to intercept communications, an offense under Section 131(2) of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003, endangering public safety and national security.
As of now, the Federal High Court in Abuja has not scheduled El-Rufai’s arraignment. The prosecution continues to gather evidence while the case awaits court proceedings.
