A Nigerian man based in the United Kingdom, Adeleke Adelani, has been sentenced to more than 13 years in prison for unlawfully terminating his former partner’s pregnancy.

The incident occurred in 2020 in Letterkenny, Ireland, where the 28-year-old reportedly lured the woman—who was nine weeks pregnant at the time—to his residence under the pretext of discussing the pregnancy.

He then forced her to take misoprostol tablets, resulting in the termination of the pregnancy.

Adelani pleaded guilty before jury selection began. During sentencing at the Letterkenny Circuit Court, Judge John Aylmer imposed an 11-year prison term, suspending the final two years, for causing the unlawful termination of pregnancy.

He also handed down a five-year sentence, with the final 12 months suspended, for assault causing harm. Both sentences will run concurrently.

In her victim impact statement, the woman said she had forgiven Adelani but emphasised that forgiveness did not excuse his actions.

She described the emotional trauma, stating that he “took far more than my freedom” and deprived her of a future she had begun to plan.

Adelani, who is already serving a separate seven-year sentence for another offence, apologised in a letter read before the court, taking responsibility for his actions.
