One person has been confirmed dead while four others were rescued after a tanker crash at Abule-Egba, Lagos, involving a MACK tanker and a Toyota Corolla at Ekoro Junction on Friday night.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident in a statement, saying the collision occurred at about 7:30 p.m. on Friday, February 20, 2026, at Ekoro Junction.

According to LASTMA, the MACK tanker, with registration number EKY 900 XY, reportedly lost control and rammed into a Toyota Corolla with registration number AAA 823 XY, before crashing into a nearby shop.
The impact caused serious structural damage in the area and triggered panic among pedestrians, traders, and shop owners.
“The ferocity of the impact occasioned extensive structural devastation and generated palpable panic among pedestrians, traders, and adjoining business operators within the corridor,” LASTMA said.
Authorities confirmed that one person died in the crash, while four others were trapped in the wreckage before being rescued by emergency responders. The rescued victims reportedly sustained minor injuriesand received immediate medical attention.
LASTMA officials were said to have responded swiftly, deploying rescue and recovery teams to the scene. Traffic was controlled, damaged vehicles evacuated, and the crowd managed to prevent further incidents.
A heavy-duty tow truck was later deployed to remove the tanker and clear debris from the road to restore traffic flow.
The tanker driver reportedly absconded from the scene immediately after the accident, an action strongly condemned by authorities. Efforts are currently underway to track him down.
Personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, Ekoro Division, were also present to secure the area and support investigations into the incident, including the reported brake failure.
