  • Voting starts in Kuje Area of FCT  amid low voter turnout.

  • BVAS delay cited as key reason for voter apathy.

  • Election peaceful, with party agents from APC, PDP, and ADC monitoring.

Accreditation and voting have started across polling units in the Kuje Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, but reports indicate a noticeably low turnout of voters.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the early arrival of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials and electoral materials allowed the exercise to commence smoothly at several polling units, including 035 behind the Secretariat, 030 at Kauna Plaza, and 003, 004, 026, and 032 at Kayarda Primary School.

Agents from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), All Progressives Congress (APC), and African Democratic Congress were present to monitor proceedings.

Some voters and party agents attributed the low turnout to technical issues with the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), which was scheduled to start operating at 10 a.m.

APC agent Abraham Silas said: “Voters were told to wait till 10 a.m. when the BVAS was designed to start working. Some had to go home and hoped to return later.”

PDP agent Ado Shekwolo expressed satisfaction with security and hoped for a credible, peaceful election.

Voter Dauda Attah noted that the delayed BVAS start contributed to low participation.

Other observers, including APC agent Sani Mohammed, suggested that council elections generally attract lower voter interest compared to national elections.

Meanwhile, Assistant Presiding Officer at Kauna Plaza, Mrs. Jamila Sabo, reported that the exercise was peaceful, with no security challenges and early arrival of materials.

Despite the low turnout in some areas, electoral officials continue to ensure that voters can exercise their franchise efficiently.
