Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde on Tuesday held a closed-door meeting with the national leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, in Ibadan, sparking fresh speculation over political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The private meeting took place at the Governor’s Office in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital. A video that later surfaced online showed Kwankwaso arriving at the premises, where he was warmly received and ushered in for the talks.

As of the time of filing this report, neither Makinde nor Kwankwaso has issued an official statement explaining the purpose of the visit.

However, political watchers believe the meeting may be linked to quiet consultations and strategic alignments already taking shape ahead of the 2027 elections.

Kwankwaso, a former Kano State governor, was the presidential candidate of the NNPP in the 2023 general election, where he placed fourth with 1,496,689 votes, behind President Bola Tinubu of the APC, Atiku Abubakar of the PDP, and Peter Obi of the Labour Party.

Makinde, who is currently serving his second and final term as Oyo State governor, is constitutionally expected to leave office in 2027. This reality has increasingly placed him in national political conversations, with analysts watching closely to see what role he may play beyond Oyo State.

“High-level meetings like this rarely happen without political significance, especially as the 2027 election draws closer,” a political analyst based in Ibadan said.

While both camps have remained tight-lipped, observers say such engagements often point to early alliance talks, coalition-building efforts, or strategic positioning in anticipation of a fiercely contested election cycle.

With political calculations intensifying across party lines, the Makinde–Kwankwaso meeting adds another layer of intrigue to what many expect will be a highly competitive and possibly realigned 2027 race.
