Although Disu is due for statutory retirement in April 2026 when he turns 60, provisions of the amended Police Act allow an Inspector-General to serve a four-year tenure, meaning he could remain in office until 2030 if confirmed.

The Presidency said a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council will be convened to consider his appointment before forwarding his name to the Senate for confirmation.

His elevation may also trigger the retirement or resignation of several senior officers, particularly Deputy Inspectors-General who are his seniors in the force hierarchy.
