Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Information and Strategy, has defended the newly signed Electoral Act, saying it closed loopholes opposition parties allegedly planned to exploit.

Reacting to criticisms from opposition leaders, Onanuga accused parties including the African Democratic Congress and the New Nigeria People’s Party of spreading misinformation and making reckless allegations against the Federal Government.

He said the opposition was attempting to manipulate public opinion after failing to influence the legislative process.
According to him, the amended law allows real-time electronic transmission of election results while recognising Form EC8A as a valid backup in the event of network failure, stressing that the results viewing portal is only for public access and not a collation centre.
The presidential spokesman also defended provisions on direct primaries and consensus candidate selection, arguing that the reforms return political parties to their members and eliminate the delegate system which he described as corrupt.
He maintained that the National Assembly consulted widely before passing the law and dismissed claims that the administration intends to turn Nigeria into a one-party state, insisting that the new Electoral Act strengthens Nigeria’s democratic process.
