Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides disclosed that the drone — identified as a Shahed aircraft — crashed inside the British military facility shortly after midnight, causing limited structural damage but no casualties.

The British government confirmed the development, with Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper stating that the unmanned drone impacted the runway area.

She said security protocols were immediately activated and precautionary measures implemented to protect personnel and infrastructure. Operational details, she added, could not be publicly disclosed.

The European Union responded swiftly, expressing solidarity with Cyprus. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reaffirmed the bloc’s commitment to the security of its member states, stressing that the union stands firmly behind Cyprus amid emerging threats.

Christodoulides emphasised that Cyprus is not engaged in any military action and has no intention of joining the escalating conflict, describing the broader region as facing severe geopolitical instability.

The incident follows Britain’s decision to permit the United States to use its bases for what officials described as defensive operations aimed at neutralising Iranian missile capabilities.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer clarified that the United Kingdom did not participate in initial strikes against Iran and would not engage in offensive action, but would continue supporting collective self-defence efforts.

The base, located near Limassol in southern Cyprus, remains operational as investigations and security assessments continue. Authorities have yet to indicate whether further defensive or retaliatory steps will follow.
