The ceremony took place in the East Room of the White House and marked the first time Messi has officially visited the executive mansion since moving to the United States to play in Major League Soccer (MLS).
During the event, Trump praised Messi’s influence on the sport in the country, saying the Argentine legend has helped raise the profile of soccer across the United States.
“Lionel Messi has changed the way Americans look at soccer. His arrival has elevated the game and brought millions of new fans to the sport,” Trump said during the ceremony.
Messi attended the event wearing a formal suit alongside several of his teammates, including Luis Suárez and Sergio Busquets.
As part of the ceremony, the Inter Miami captain presented the president with a personalised “Trump 47” Inter Miami jersey, drawing applause from guests gathered in the East Room.
The visit also marked Messi’s first public appearance at the White House after he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom earlier in 2025 through private correspondence.
The White House celebration comes just 48 hours before Inter Miami faces D.C. United at Audi Field.
Security around the White House was significantly increased during the visit, with dozens of fans gathering outside the North Fence Line hoping to catch a glimpse of the Argentine football icon before the team left for training.
Messi’s presence continues to draw massive attention across the United States, with many analysts saying his move to MLS has dramatically increased the league’s global visibility.
