Suspected Boko Haram terrorists have overrun a military base in Kukawa Local Government Area, Borno State, killing the commanding officer and several soldiers in a fresh attack on security forces.

According to local sources, the insurgents launched the attack in the early hours of Monday, storming the military camp at about 12:30 a.m.

A source from the town said the terrorists attacked from multiple directions, overwhelming the troops stationed at the base.

“They stormed the town from different directions and launched an attack on the military camp,” the source said.

Another security source disclosed that the attackers forced soldiers to retreat from the base after an intense gun battle.

The terrorists reportedly set military vehicles on fire and carted away weapons and ammunition from the camp.

“I cannot say much about the casualties, but it’s very sad that we also lost the commanding officer here,” the security source added.

The latest attack comes just weeks after troops successfully repelled a similar assault by the insurgents in February, killing several members of the terror group.

At the time, the commanding officer and his troops were praised by residents for defending the community against the attackers.

The lawmaker representing Kukawa Local Government Area in the Borno State House of Assembly, Karta Maina Ma’aji Lawan, had also celebrated the soldiers for their bravery.

However, reacting to the latest development, the lawmaker expressed sadness that the military base was successfully overrun this time.

In recent months, Boko Haram and other armed groups have intensified attacks on military formations in Nigeria’s North-East, raising concerns about the security situation in the region.

Last year, Bola Ahmed Tinubu declared a state of emergency on security in response to increasing attacks by terrorists, bandits and other criminal groups across the country.

Despite the move, violent groups have continued to carry out attacks in several parts of the country, often targeting military bases and rural communities.
