Governor Seyi Makinde has expressed concern following the defection of Dauda Lawal from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress, calling it a challenging moment for both the party and Nigeria’s democracy.
Speaking on Tuesday during the expanded meeting of the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT) in Abuja, Governor Makinde described the defection as a difficult period for party leaders and a test for Nigeria’s democratic system.

“It’s a challenging period for us as leaders and members of the Peoples Democratic Party. It is also a challenging period for democracy in Nigeria,” he said.
Makinde added that discussions with political analysts and experienced actors in Nigeria’s political evolution indicate that the current political climate is unusual.
“I have been talking to people of knowledge, people who have been involved in the political evolution of this country, and none of them have seen a political landscape like what we are witnessing today,” the governor noted.
Despite the setback, Makinde reassured party members, saying:
“I can only say we are only two remaining, but we are not bothered.”
He emphasized the need for PDP leaders to remain conscious of their actions, noting that history will judge how they handled this period of political turbulence.
