According to the terrorist group, the attack targeted a forward operating position belonging to the 21 Special Armoured Brigade during recent military operations in the forest.
ISWAP claimed the assault resulted in about 30 soldiers either killed or wounded, although the figure has not been independently verified by military authorities.
The incident reportedly occurred over the weekend while troops from the 21 Special Armoured Brigade were conducting clearance operations aimed at flushing out insurgents and destroying their hideouts in the forest.
During the operation, the troops were said to have been ambushed by suspected ISWAP fighters in the dense terrain of Sambisa.
The group later released an image of the alleged attacker, claiming he carried out the assault on the military position.
The attack highlights the continuing security challenges in Borno State, a region that has long been a stronghold for insurgent groups.
Despite ongoing military campaigns under Operation Hadin Kai, militants linked to ISWAP and Boko Haram continue to launch attacks on security forces and communities.
Last year, Bola Ahmed Tinubu declared a national security emergency to address rising insecurity across the country.
However, attacks by terrorists, bandits, and other criminal groups have persisted in several parts of Nigeria.
