Henry Nwosu, the former Super Eagles midfielder and Imo State-born football icon, has died at the age of 62.
His passing was confirmed on Saturday morning by former teammate Segun Odegbami, also a member of Nigeria’s victorious 1980 Africa Cup of Nations squad.

Odegbami wrote, “After five days in hospital battling for his life, the one I call ‘Youngest Millionaire’ passed on at 4:00 am this morning at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Lagos, where he had been in intensive care since Wednesday. May he rest peacefully with our Creator in Heaven.”

Nwosu rose to prominence as the youngest member of the Green Eagles during their historic 1980 Africa Cup of Nations triumph on home soil.
Known for his creativity, vision, and technical ability in midfield, he later became a significant figure in Nigeria’s domestic football scene.
After retiring from professional football, Nwosu remained active as a coach and mentor, nurturing new generations of Nigerian talent.
His death comes shortly after the passing of another Nigerian football legend, former Super Eagles coach Adegboye Onigbinde, who died on March 9 at the age of 88. Both men were instrumental in shaping Nigeria’s football legacy during the 1980s.
