More than 70 bishops from the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria meet the pontiff to discuss the state of the Catholic Church in Nigeria.

The visit comes as Pope Leo XIV prepares for his first apostolic trip to Africa in April.
Pope Leo XIV on Saturday received members of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) who are currently in Rome for their Ad Limina Apostolorum pilgrimage.
The Ad Limina Apostolorum is a long-standing Catholic tradition in which bishops from different countries travel to the Vatican to meet the Pope and submit reports on the pastoral work, challenges and general condition of their dioceses.

The visit follows the conclusion of the bishops’ conference where key matters affecting the Catholic Church in Nigeria were deliberated.

A video released by Vatican Media on social media showed some of the Nigerian bishops presenting gifts to the pontiff during the audience.
Earlier, a delegation of 37 Nigerian bishops met the Pope on March 6, while another group of 35 bishops held discussions with him on Saturday as part of the pilgrimage.
Pope Leo XIV was elected head of the Catholic Church on May 8, 2025, and was formally inaugurated on May 18, 2025.
The pontiff is also expected to undertake his first apostolic visit to Africa in April, with scheduled stops in Algeria, Cameroon, Angola, and Equatorial Guinea.
