- Lagos to restart monthly environmental sanitation exercise
- Exercise begins April 25, 2026
- Residents expected to clean surroundings and clear drainage channels
- Programme aims to improve hygiene and flood prevention
The Lagos State Government has announced the resumption of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise nearly a decade after it was suspended in the state.
Residents of Lagos will once again participate in the sanitation exercise, which requires people to clean their surroundings, clear drainage channels in front of their homes, and dispose of waste properly.

The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, in a statement issued on Saturday.
According to Wahab, the sanitation exercise will officially resume on Saturday, April 25, 2026, and will take place on the last Saturday of every month between 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.
“During this period, residents are enjoined to clean their surroundings, clear drainage channels in their frontages, and dispose of waste properly as a civic responsibility,” Wahab said.
The commissioner urged residents to see the exercise as a shared responsibility aimed at creating a cleaner and healthier environment.
He added that the initiative would be strongly enforced by the state government.
“This exercise is a collective responsibility and a vital part of our commitment to a cleaner, healthier, and flood-resilient Lagos,” Wahab stated.
Wahab also explained that the state is reviving a sanitation culture that was once common among residents of Lagos.
The government believes that bringing back the monthly exercise will help tackle waste management challenges, reduce flooding caused by blocked drainage systems, and promote environmental hygiene across the state.
