A source within the Nigerian Railway Corporation confirmed the development but spoke on condition of anonymity, noting that he was not authorised to publicly comment on the incident.
Passengers on board said the disruption occurred suddenly, causing panic inside the train coaches as the train came to an abrupt stop.
Some travellers reported hearing a loud bang before the train jolted violently, throwing several occupants off their seats and creating confusion among passengers.
Eyewitness accounts suggested that the Abuja-bound train may have collided with another train along the rail corridor, prompting authorities to temporarily suspend operations while the situation was assessed.
Sources said a number of passengers sustained cuts and bruises after being flung against seats and metal fittings inside the train compartments.
One of the passengers, Sada Malumfashi, who shared his experience on X, described the frightening moment shortly after leaving the train.
According to him, the sudden jolt caught many passengers unprepared, leading to injuries among those inside the coaches.

“Just dropped from the Kaduna–Abuja train. We heard a loud bang and the train jolted to a stop, flinging people across. Passengers got hit, and most are bleeding and severely injured,” he wrote.
Malumfashi added that the train remained stationary for about 30 minutes before it resumed movement slowly toward Kubwa.
He also criticised the lack of immediate communication from the railway authorities regarding the situation.
When contacted, the spokesperson for the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Callistus Unyimadu, confirmed the incident and said an official statement would be released soon.
Further details about the cause of the derailment and the number of injured passengers were still being awaited as of the time of filing this report.
