Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed members of his political support group, the Renewed Hope Ambassadors, to distribute rice across the country to support citizens observing Ramadan and the Lenten season.
The directive was disclosed by the Director-General of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors and Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodinma, in a statement released on Saturday.

Uzodinma said the initiative aims to strengthen national unity and demonstrate compassion during a period that holds deep spiritual significance for both Muslims and Christians.
According to him, the programme reflects the President’s commitment to promoting unity and providing support to citizens during important religious seasons.
“Ramadan and Lent are seasons that remind us of sacrifice, charity, and care for one another,” Uzodinma said.
He explained that the Renewed Hope Ambassadors would coordinate the distribution through their nationwide grassroots network to ensure that families across Nigeria benefit from the intervention.
Under the directive, the support group will organise the distribution across various communities to ensure that households observing fasting during this period receive assistance.
Uzodinma noted that the initiative is intended to help families experience the spirit of togetherness during the sacred season when both Ramadan and Lent are being observed.
The Tinubu administration previously distributed rice during Christmas celebrations as part of efforts to support Nigerians during major religious and cultural events.
The latest programme is expected to cover both Christian and Muslim communities, highlighting the government’s focus on inclusivity and religious harmony.
However, some opposition figures have criticised the distribution of rice, arguing that such interventions do not address the underlying economic challenges facing many Nigerians.
According to critics, the government should focus more on long-term economic empowerment rather than temporary relief measures.
