The Vice-Chancellor, Ernest Izevbigie, disclosed this in Abuja on Monday during the university’s third matriculation ceremony for the 2025/2026 academic session.

According to reports, more than 272 students were formally admitted into the institution during the ceremony.

While the event was held physically at the university’s Abuja main campus, it was conducted virtually for students at its Delta State campus

Penalty for Violations

Speaking with reporters, Prof. Izevbigie explained that the policy aims to minimise distractions and encourage students to concentrate on their studies.

He said students who violate the rule for the first time could face a two-week suspension, with stricter penalties for repeated offences.

“Using smartphones can be a distraction, and they (students) all know that. Their parents know that. As a matter of fact, that is one of our selling points,” he said.

The Vice-Chancellor added that students are allowed to use basic mobile phones for making calls and sending text messages but not smartphones that provide internet access.

Focus on Academic Discipline

According to the university management, restricting smartphone use is part of its strategy to maintain a learning environment where students can focus on their academic responsibilities.

The institution believes the policy will encourage students to avoid unnecessary online activities and concentrate fully on their studies during their time on campus.
