Operatives of the Maiduguri Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested three individuals suspected of illegal gold mining in Borno State.
The suspects—Umar Muhammad, Modu Bamai Umar, and Sani Samaila—were apprehended in Mallam Jakwa town, Hawul Local Government Area, following intelligence on their unlawful operations.

Items recovered during the arrests included a small gold measuring machine and quantities of mined gold.
The EFCC stated that the suspects’ activities were worsening insecurity and contributing to environmental degradation in the region.
Investigations are ongoing, and the suspects will be charged to court once completed.
“Their suspected illegal mining activities are worsening insecurity and environmental degradation in the state,” the commission said, adding that the joint efforts of security agencies restored order in the area.
