President Bola Tinubu reflected on his years in exile during the military era of Sani Abacha (1993–1998), explaining how the United Kingdom offered him safety while he participated in Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement.
Speaking at a state banquet in Windsor Castle on Wednesday, Tinubu noted that his residence had been placed under Metropolitan Police surveillance due to threats from agents of the junta.

He expressed gratitude for the protection received and described the period as pivotal in shaping his political journey.
The address, delivered before members of the British royal family, also emphasised Nigeria–UK diplomatic ties, shared democratic values, and the contributions of Nigerians in the UK to sectors like the National Health Service and sports.
“This solidarity remains etched in our collective memory, and it is deeply humbling for me to stand before Your Majesty today as the President of a democratic Nigeria,” Tinubu stated.
