The incident reportedly occurred on March 18 during a cultural celebration in the area. According to accounts from residents, women and girls were allegedly targeted during specific hours when they were expected to remain indoors.
Some sources claimed that in previous years, the community leadership usually issued clear guidelines and safety notices ahead of such events. However, this year, there were reportedly no proper warnings or sensitisation, which may have contributed to the situation.
A youth involved in rescuing some victims expressed anger over the incident, calling on authorities to take immediate action.
He urged the Delta State Government, local council officials, traditional leaders, and security agencies to ensure that those responsible are identified and prosecuted.
The reports have created fear in the community, with many residents expressing concern over safety during local celebrations.
The spokesperson of the Delta State Police Command, Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident and strongly condemned it.
He described the act as unacceptable and a serious violation of human rights.
“This is alarming, disgusting and embarrassing. The Commissioner of Police has ordered an investigation into the incident. No custom or tradition is superior to the rights of citizens,” he said.
The Commissioner of Police, Aina Adesola, has directed a full investigation into the matter.
Authorities say efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest those involved. The incident has continued to attract reactions on social media and among civil society groups, with many demanding justice for the victims.
Residents have also been advised to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as investigations continue.
