The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, has denied reports claiming that he ordered the complete dissolution of tactical police units across Nigeria.
In a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, DC Anthony Placid, the police said the reports circulating online were inaccurate and misrepresented the IGP’s directive.

According to him, the IGP did not order the disbandment of all tactical teams, but instead directed that their number should be reduced to improve supervision and efficiency.
Under the new directive:
• Zonal and State Commands can have a maximum of five tactical teams.
• Area Commands and Divisions can have a maximum of three tactical teams.
This reduction may be achieved by merging some units or disbanding others, depending on the decision of commanders.
The police leadership said that the increase in tactical units over time has created problems, including:
• Poor supervision of some teams
• Allegations of misconduct and abuse
• Shortage of police officers at regular police stations
By reducing the number of tactical teams, the IGP hopes to send more officers back to police stations and improve policing at the community level.
The directive does not apply to security units created by state governments, such as:
• Rapid Response Squad (RRS) – Lagos
• Special Response Squad (SRS) – Oyo
• Operation DOO-AKPOR – Bayelsa
These units will continue to operate as usual.
The police said the move is part of the IGP’s effort to create a more accountable and people-friendly police force, while reducing complaints about the activities of tactical units.
