Agreement at Risk: Delay threatens January deal aimed at ending recurring strikes and improving lecturers’ welfare.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a four-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, demanding immediate implementation of the newly approved salary structure for lecturers.
ASUU President, Christopher Piwuna, warned that failure to comply within the stipulated timeframe could trigger a nationwide strike across public universities.

“We have issued a four-day ultimatum from today to the federal government to begin the payment of the newly approved salary structure. Failure to comply will attract a strong response from the union,” he said.
Speaking at Sa’adu Zungur University, Piwuna stressed that the union expects immediate action, noting that any delay would provoke decisive measures capable of disrupting academic activities nationwide.
The warning comes months after ASUU and the Federal Government reached an agreement in January aimed at resolving long-standing disputes that have led to repeated strikes in Nigeria’s university system.
A central component of the agreement is the new salary structure designed to improve lecturers’ welfare and address lingering issues tied to the partially implemented 2009 ASUU-FG agreement.
ASUU insists that prompt implementation is critical to sustaining industrial harmony, warning that continued delays could once again plunge universities into crisis.
