Unknown gunmen on Wednesday attacked a couple on their way from a traditional marriage along the busy Agbor-Benin road, in Delta state.

The gunmen reportedly shot the bride alongside another male occupant of the vehicle, while whisking away the groom and five others to an unknown destination.

The couple were returning from Egoro-na-oka in Esan West local government area in Edo state when they were attacked about 5pm on Wednesday.

Mr & Mrs Ebikabowei Oporoza were billed to be wedded at The Light Deliverance and Miracle Centre, Udu local government area on Saturday, June 26, 2021.

Daily Report Nigeria gathered that the Vice President of the National Union of Ogulagha Students, Ms Happiness Nimughan is part of those kidnapped by the gunmen.

Our correspondent gathered that the abductors have contacted the family of Ms Happiness to demand a ₦10 million ransom for her release.

The incident has been greeted with heavy condemnation from different quarters, with the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) calling for the unconditional release of the kidnap victims.

The IYC further lamented the ineffectiveness of security agencies in the face of a rising insecurity worry in the state.

The bride and the other gunshot victim have since been admitted into an undisclosed hospital.

The Delta State Police Command was yet to comment on the incident as at the time of filing this report.
