The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU has plotted to resume a fresh strike action.
This is as negotiations in the 2020 Agreement reached between the Union and the federal government, where the latter agreed to pay the N30 billion revitalization funds
To prevent a return of the suspended strike, the Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) has called on Nigerians to pressure the federal and state governments to meet the Union’s reasonable demands.
Reuben Jonathan, the zonal coordinator, said the zone met and examined the Memorandum of Understanding signed with the federal government on December 23, 2020; concerns relating to the draft restructuring agreement signed in May 2021; and other issues affecting the university system in particular.
According to him, the zone acknowledged the federal government’s effort in sending visitation panels to public universities.

He said, “The zone expects the speedy release of the whitepaper of visitation panels to the universities for the benefit of the university system.”
As visitors to state institutions, he urged state governors to follow the federal government’s lead and form visiting committees for state-owned universities as soon as possible.
He further expressed “The federal government team and ASUU concluded the renegotiation meeting in May 2021, but up till now, our Union is in dark as to the position of the renegotiation with the federal government.
“This lukewarm attitude and deliberate delay have triggered agitations from our members,”
“The inefficiency and over-reliance on the federal government’s interventions by state-owned universities, emanating from ASUU struggles, have led the state governors to develop a lukewarm attitude towards funding state universities,”
The zonal coordinator was also concerned about the non-allotment of the N30 billion naira fund promised in the 2020 Agreement with the union.
