The Union Berlin record signing began to shine following departure from Liverpool to permanently join Union Berlin this summer after he had spent last season on loan at Mainz.

Awoniyi who opened his goalscoring account for this season against Bayern Leverkusen now has three goals from his first three games.

Consequently, he has not been able to net in a row of three league games before Sunday’s clash with Mainz.

The first of Awoniyi’s brace sent him into the Union Berlin record books as the Iron Ones’ 100th Bundesliga goal.

For his current excellent performance, Awoniyi is therefore in Nigeria’s line-ups ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying double-header against Les Fauves of the Central African Republic.
