António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, has formally announced that Amina Mohammed of Nigeria will continue in her role as Deputy Secretary-General during his second term.

The UN in a statement said that by delegating development coordination to the deputy secretary-general, Guterres initiated the most ambitious reform of the organization’s development system in its history.

It was noted that Mohammed’s leadership contributed to the UN conceptual shift that member states sought when adopting the Sustainable Development Goals.

“Over the last five years, the United Nations Sustainable Development Group has been strengthened to improve global development leadership and oversight, and the United Nations has established a strengthened United Nations Resident Coordinator system as the foundation of a more effective development system.”

The secretary-general praised Mohammed’s leadership of the United Nations Sustainable Development Group, as well as her determination to strengthen collective results and maximize the impact of the UN development system on the ground.

“From our strong response to the socioeconomic effects of the COVID-19 crisis, through increased climate action and unprecedented momentum for development financing, to her strong emphasis on coherence across humanitarian, political, and development action, her role was instrumental in keeping the Sustainable Development Goals alive at the country level and protecting the Paris Agreement on climate change, despite significant headwinds,” he said.

According to the statement, Mohammed served as Minister of Environment of the Federal Republic of Germany prior to her appointment as deputy secretary-general in January 2017.
