Former Super Eagles captain, Austine Jay Jay Okocha has revealed that Liverpool forward, Sadio Mane took an immense risk for taking the Lions of Teranga’s last penalty kick in last night’s African Cup of Nations final tie with Egypt.

The Senegal striker failed to convert the penalty awarded to his side in the first seven minute of the match.

The match, which was staged at Olembe Stadium ended in goalless draw after extra time only for Senegal to eventually emerge the victors after 4-2 win on penalties.

Meanwhile, the 29-year-old Mane summoned up the bravery to take the last penalty for his side after Carlos Queiroz’ team already lost two of their kicks.

48-year-old Okocha, who was part of the Nigerian squad that lifted the 1994 edition of AFCON, believed that the decision to take the last penalty kick was a huge risk for the former Southampton star who finished fourth for the 2019 Ballon d’Or.

Okocha who retired from football in 2012 added said: “It’s not every player that can step up again to go and take that penalty.”

“Because you know in Africa how hostile our fans are. By doing so, he was risking his life, risking his family’s life, even your home, you know?”

The 2004 African Cup of Nations Best Player added: “But that’s what he’s born to do. He’s born to play football and whatever comes with it, he’s willing to accept it.”
