Senator Bwacha of Taraba South abandoned the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, on Tuesday.

During the Senate plenary, Bwacha announced his decision on the Senate floor.

Senator Bwacha was the Deputy Minority Leader before joining the APC.

He left the PDP because he wants to operate in an open competition environment, as well as because of what he described as the massive division and factionalization of his party in his home state.

He stated that the APC is present in his Taraba State Senatorial District.

Senator Ahmad Lawan, President of the Senate, stated in his remarks that with the latest development, the ruling APC has 70 senators, the PDP has 38, and the Young Progressives Party, YPP, has one.

Senator George Sekibo, PDP, Rivers East, was ruled out of order by the Senate President.

Sekibo had previously raised a Constitutional point of order, citing Section 68 of the 1999 Constitution as amended, accusing Bwacha of having no legitimate reasons to leave the PDP despite the fact that there was no crisis in the party.
