Adesina Warns Against Politics Over Delay in Assent to Electoral Bill

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, has warned against cheap politics in response to the perceived delay in assenting to the Electoral Bill by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).

Adesina said in a statement titled ‘Assent To Electoral Bill: No Need For Saber Ratling,’ that some interest groups are exploiting the perceived delay to foment civil unrest.

This is because he stated that the President still has time to assent to the Bill, which he stated must be thoroughly scrutinized and made as close to perfect as possible.

“Some interest groups are cashing in on what they perceive to be a delay in the signing of the electoral bill into law by the President,” Adesina said.

One can only lament their lack of understanding of constitutional requirements, as the President has 30 days after the National Assembly transmits the Bill to him to sign it or decline assent.

“It is on record that the amended Bill was delivered to the Presidency on January 31, 2022, implying that the Executive could conduct due diligence on it until March 1, as required by the Constitution.”

Any proposed legislation affecting the country’s electoral fortunes must be thoroughly scrutinized and made as near-perfect as possible.

Those who are playing cheap politics with it are thus encouraged to keep quiet, knowing that the right thing will be done within the legal time.
