There are strong indications that businesses and corporations in Nigeria are preparing to capitalize on the high-speed, capacity, and low-latency features of Nigeria’s upcoming Fifth Generation (5G) network rollout.

“The intense anticipation and enthusiasm spring from the desire of digitally-literate Nigerians eager to capitalize on the benefits of new technology.”

This notion of 5G’s bright prospects reverberated at various panel sessions on Tuesday at the ongoing 2022 edition of the AfricaNXT conference, which is co-sponsored by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and held at the Landmark Event Centre in Victoria Island, Lagos.

Participants at AfricaNXT panel sessions from various organizations and thematic areas expressed optimism that 5G services will drastically reduce unemployment in Nigeria if stakeholders collaborate with willing internet-compliant Nigerians on various projects prior to 5G deployment.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), as the country’s telecoms regulator, is the primary enabler of the 5G network’s launch.

During a panel discussion titled “Built to Last: Hardcoding Resilience into the DNA of Your Business,” panelists revealed that financial institutions have created digital work tools and employment opportunities by collaborating with results-oriented individuals on various financially rewarding 5G tech projects, products, and solutions.

Against the backdrop of numerous opportunities for free global education via the Internet, which will be enhanced by 5G, panelists opined that individuals must identify themselves as a business, continuously improve their knowledge base, and partner with numerous corporations in the country that have created work solutions and tools that make work easier than being full-time employees.

Participants reasoned that organizations that want to retain talents who no longer want to be full-time employees can engage them to work remotely and deliver results by leveraging the world of possibilities that next-generation technologies such as 5G will unleash.

Objectively, panelists and participants believe that smart contracts enabled by 5G’s robust connectivity will reduce unemployment and ensure long-term socio-economic growth.

Another panel discussion on “Disruptive Public Relations in the Imminent Metaverse Era” agreed that the Metaverse, while not fully developed and not yet fully deployed, is expected to allow its users to engage in a shared world of unique experiences. A metaverse is a network of three-dimensional virtual worlds focused on social interaction. It is a digital world with its own economy that will connect vastly different types of social interactions.

Indeed, 5G services in Nigeria, which will usher in a new generation of internet services due to their high speed and ultra-low latency capability, will provide the resilient technology and platforms that will position Nigeria as an early adopter of Materverse, which is expected to usher in a renaissance in industrial and social relations.

The NCC recently granted 3.5GHz spectrum licenses to Mafab Communications Limited and MTN Nigeria, and the two companies are set to launch 5G services soon after winning the 3.5GHz spectrum auction in Abuja in December 2021.

Prof. Umar Danbatta, Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, has encouraged Nigerians to look forward to exciting opportunities with the deployment of 5G services in Nigeria.

The NCC will host a panel discussion on the topic “Moving Forward Steadily: Socio-Economic Significance of 5G Service Deployment” during the week-long AfricaNXT conference 2022. The discussion will take place at the FutureNow Stage, Innovation Pavilion, Landmark Event Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos, on March 3, 2022, at 2:00pm.

The discussion will bring together key stakeholders to discuss the importance of deploying 5G services in Nigeria and across Africa, with a focus on the benefits that 5G services can provide to individuals, businesses, and the national economy.
