The Ogun State Government has banned the act of street begging in the state as it has warned people engaging in such acts to stop or face punitive measures of sweeping the market square for two weeks.

Disclosing this, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Mrs. Funmi Efuwape, gave the warning while addressing destitutes caught roaming in one of the streets in the state capital, Oke Ilewo, Abeokuta.

Efuwape condemned the act of able-bodied men and women still seen begging around for money within the state capital metropolis.

She further enjoined able-bodied people to rather focus on decent livelihood rather than engaging in street begging.

“Some of you have been empowered financially at one time or the other and you have diverted the money to unprofitable ventures.

“This is just a warning, after this, any street beggar caught , will be made to sweep market for two consecutive weeks as well as wash the public toilets,” She affirmed.

However, the Director of Rehabilitation Services, Prince Adetoye Adeshina, assured that a shed had been built by the state government for destitutes, where they could stay during the day before retiring to there various abodes during the night.

Adetoye concluded that anybody caught after the warning, loitering and begging around the state capital would be severely dealt with.
