The Federal Government of Nigeria, under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari, is set to shut the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos for six months. This takes effect from July 24, Friday.

Announced by the Federal Controller of Lagos Works on Monday, Olukayode Popoola said that consultations are ongoing for another phase of repair work to begin on the 11.8km bridge.

While assuring that relevant agencies has been contacted to monitor traffic during the repair period, Olukayode also disclosed that the bridge had gone through a series of repair work and was last shut in August, 2018.

Meanwhile, the repair work is to commence on the outward mainland section of the bridge.

There have been reports of some worn-out expansion joints on the structure as this has raised concerns and fears over the safety and state of the bridge.

With the new development, motorists who ply the bridge will have to start making arrangements for alternative routes.
