The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed an appeal filed by a former Governor of Rivers state Rt Hon. Rotimi Amaechi.

In the suit, Amaechi, the immediate past Minister of Transportation, wants the apex court to restrain the Rivers state government from probing him in the alleged N96bn fraud and fraudulent sales of valued assets belonging to the State government.
The apex court, in a unanimous judgement by a five-man panel of Justices, said it found no reason to stop the Rivers State government from probing the erstwhile governor over his alleged involvement in the fraudulent sales of valued assets belonging to the state.

Recall that Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state had set up a seven-man panel headed by Justice George Omekeji, to probe Amaechi over alleged withdrawal of N96 billion from the state’s treasury during his tenure as governor.
Some of the valuable assets that Amaechi was summoned to give account of, included the Omoku Gas Turbine, Afam Gas Turbine, Trans Amadi Gas Turbine, Eleme Gas Turbine, Olympia Hotel, as well as his alleged award of contract for the execution of Mono Rail Project.

The court further slammed N1million fine against the Appellant.

With the final decision of the Apex court, Amaechi will be made to appear before the Commission of Inquiry headed by Justice George Omekeji to give account of how N96B was allegedly withdrawn from the Treasury of the state government and how it was expended.
