Presidential aspirants on the platform of the All Progressives Congress have thrown their weight behind the party fielding a consensus candidate for the 2023 presidential election.

This was revealed on Friday by the Chairman of the presidential screening committee of the APC, Chief John Oyegun.

Oyegun stated this while submitting the committee’s report from screening the 23 aspirants jostling for the ticket.

According to the PSC Chairman, 99% of the APC presidential aspirants agreed to support the idea of a consensus candidate should the party tow that path.

Presenting the report to the APC National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, Oyegun said only one of the aspirants kicked against supporting a consensus candidate.

According to Oyegun, the aspirant said he will only support a consensus candidate on the condition that they were chosen.

Though, the screening committee chairman did not reveal the identity of the aspirant, he said the party is open to a full fledged primary election for all aspirants to test their popularity.

“We engaged every aspirant on the issue of consensus. It is a pleasant surprise that 99 percent agreed that the party is supreme. And that whatever the party decides – with proper consultation – they will likely accept.

“Only one exception, who said I will accept consensus only if it is for me. I think it is a point that needs to be made and emphasised.

“So that gives you a lot of leeway in the hours ahead to trim down even more drastically.

“But finally we think we should not be afraid of a contested primary if anybody insists on a contest,” Oyegun said.

Daily Report Nigeria earlier reported that the APC presidential screening committee said it screened a total of 23 aspirants, with only 13 being cleared to contest the primary election, while 10 others were disqualified.
