The Federal House of Representatives has resumed hearing for the controversial Water Resources Bill, Daily Report Nigeria reports.

The bill, which seeks to bring all water resources (surface and underground) and the banks of the water sources under the control of the Federal Government, was first suggested in the 8th assembly.

It was widely rejected by members of the 8th assembly, but was reintroduced in the 9th assembly, this time receiving wild condemnation from Nigerians.

Many fear that the bill could endanger the unity of the country, judging from agitation gathered by the Land Use Act.

However, the bill resurfaced on Wednesday and was sponsored by Honourable Sada Soli, member, representing Jibia / Kaita Federal Constituency, Katsina State.

Soli, who is the Chairman, House Committee on Water Resources, said wide consultations have been in order to obtain a better version of the bill.

He also assured that if indications suggest a negative impact of the bill on the country, he will voluntarily withdraw the bill.

The bill was read for the first time on Wednesday, and would be debated when it is scheduled for the second reading.
